Kannada Sangha Pune’s Kaveri College of Arts, Science and Commerce in association with Rotary Club Laxmi Road Pune and Revive Heart Foundation conducted an Awareness Programme on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation on Monday, 10th April 2023. Famous Cardiologist Dr. Jagdish Hiremath’s team of doctors guided the audience with proper demonstration of CPR. The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of lamps. For this programme Kannada Sangh’s Vice President Dr. Narayan Hegde, Principal Dr. Ashok Agrawal, Vice Principal Dr. Muckta Karmarkar, Rotary Club Laxmi Road Pune’s President Rotarian Hemant Shirguppi, Club Secretary Bhushan Kanani, Ex President Rotarian Sunita Shirguppi along with Revive Heart Foundation Operation Head, Sumayya Raghavan, Dr Kinjal Goel and other dignitaries were present on this occasion.
After Inauguration, Principal Dr. Ashok Agrawal welcomed the guests and informed them about the achievements of college in the span of a short time. He focused on how the College is taking efforts for the holistic development of the students, which will finally contribute to the nation’s youth development. He advised the students to focus on keeping their heart young and healthy.
Mr. Bhushan Kanani through his PPT presentation gave detailed information regarding the working of Rotary Club, Laxmi Road. He added that the Rotary Club is constantly trying to make positive changes in the society. He explained the main objective and purpose of Rotary Club and also threw light on the various programmes conducted for the youth. He informed about various events organized by the Rotary Club in the field of education and medicine.
Rotarian Sunita Shirguppi interacted with the students and informed them about a youth exchange programme conducted by the Rotaract. She also gave information about the New Generation Exchange Programme (NGEP).
Kannada Sangha’s Vice President Dr. Narayana Hegde, explained the main objective of having such a programme in the college. He highlighted the importance of naturopathy in leading a healthy life. He said that the right lifestyle, healthy diet and stress-free lifestyle are the three pillars of healthy life.
Dr. Jagdish Hiremath communicated through audio-video and highlighted the reason for the increase in sudden deaths. He added that with presence of mind, we can save the life using the CPR technique. He felt that it is necessary to create more and more awareness of using CPR for saving lives.
Ms.Sumayya Raghavan and her team of doctors explained the importance of first aid and emergency services in reducing the number of sudden deaths. She clarified the difference between heart attack and cardiac arrest. She demonstrated in three steps, the use of CPR technique. She explained that, in case of cardiac arrest a series of steps to be administered on the victim were as follows. The patient should be laid on the hard surface, then tap the victim on both the shoulders to check responsiveness and ask loudly if he is ok. Then check for breathing by placing the palm of the hand on the abdomen for ten seconds. Only if the victim is not breathing, begin chest compressions at the rate of 100 to 120 per minute. Continue CPR with the help of another bystander until the victim resumes normal breathing, shows signs of life or emergency medical help arrives. She added that, if CPR technique is not showing any sign of revival, it is advisable to obtain an AED (Automated External Defibrillators) kit and should use the machine for giving shock treatment as per the instructions given on the machine.
The session ended with the question-and-answer round. More than 500 students and parents were present for the session to learn the CPR technique. Asst. Professor Pooja Ambole compered the programme and proposed a vote of thanks.
