A Guest Lecture on “Environmental Sustainability and the Present Era” was organized by the ESG Committee on Friday, 28 February 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the A.V. Room. With the aim to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and its importance in today’s world. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Pratik Salgar, Assistant Professor (Law) at Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s Shankarrao Chavan Law College. The focus of the lecture was to explore the challenges faced in protecting the environment and to introduce innovative solutions for creating a more sustainable future.
The lecture included diverse discussions, on nature and environmental conservation, with real-life examples to emphasize the need for sustainability. One such example was the story of the Mahaseer fish, linked to Lord Vishnu’s Matsya Avatar, which highlights the significance of aquatic ecosystems and the balance they maintain in rivers. Dr. Salgar noted that the species is now endangered due to pollution, habitat destruction, and illegal fishing, underlining the critical need for stronger conservation efforts and environmental protection laws.
Dr. Salgar also discussed influential environmental movements, from the Chipko Movement in the 1970s to the recent global youth-led climate strikes, demonstrating how activism and legal action have played a pivotal role in raising awareness about environmental issues. Additionally, the case study of Brand Phool, a social enterprise that creates eco-friendly products using flowers, was presented to illustrate how businesses can combine sustainability with profitability and the role of corporate responsibility in fostering a greener future.
The lecture provided valuable insights into environmental sustainability, demonstrating the potential for innovative solutions and collective action to address the challenges we face. Dr. Salgar’s discourse emphasized the urgency of protecting the environment and the critical role each individual plays in creating a sustainable future.
